We are honored to announce that HydroTech Environmental Engineering and Geology, DPC (HydroTech) has been selected to receive the 2020 Big Apple Brownfield Economic Development Award for its work on the remediation and redevelopment of the property located at 801-849 and 881-885 East Gun Hill Road in the Bronx.

Each year, the Big Apple Brownfield Awards honors projects that have had positive effects on the community and that have demonstrated excellence in select categories including Economic Development. The award for Economic Development is granted to the project that demonstrates the greatest benefit to the local economy based on factors such as job creation and present and future growth potential engendered by the project in the surrounding community.

The 39,000 square foot East Gun Hill Road property was a perfect candidate and a deserving recipient of this award as the development was able to turn an underutilized parcel of land occupied by two 1-story commercial buildings into a healthy food supermarket that addresses the needs of residents and benefits the entire community, which previously had limited access to healthy food options and fresh grocery stores. The developer, Fuertes Gun Hill Road, LLC chose to develop this property into a supermarket to promote the New York State Healthy Food/Healthy Communities Initiative introduced in 2009 which responds to the lack of access to affordable, nutritious, fresh food in underserved communities of the Bronx. Adding to the economic benefits of this project, the development was also instrumental in boosting economic growth by creating a total of 120 new jobs.

HydroTech served as the environmental consultant for Fuertes Gun Hill Road, LLC and facilitated all project flows and approvals with regard to the project’s enrollment in the New York City Office of Environmental Remediation Voluntary Cleanup Program. To address program requirements, HydroTech’s team, led by Paul Matli, PG, PhD, planned and conducted the site assessment and remedial investigation, prepared a Remedial Investigation Report, developed the remedial action plan, oversaw implementation of the remedial action throughout all phases of construction, and prepared a Final Engineering Report and Site Management Plan.

HydroTech is proud to have led the remedial efforts on this project aimed at the transformation of the once underutilized property into a unique food supermarket that responds to the need for affordable and healthy food demand in this underserved community of the Bronx. Congratulations to Fuertes Gun Hill Road, LLC on this inspiring example of the positive community impacts of brownfield redevelopment.
